Q. My uncle seems to believe that I stold 200k from in aunt by forging her signature. She "forgot" that she gave me the property. He has spread the "story" to every family member and now my whole family is against my dad, mom,bros and me. Can I sue him for defamation of character and slander and win?

A. A pure accusation that someone is a 'thief' is generally considered to be defamatory per se. The problems I see are twofold. First, is that even though it's generally considered defamation, it's a bit different then a claim that some money is missing, and you are responsible. Really, he's just thinking you took advantage of your aunt. That's an opinion, that may not be actionable, even though he used the term 'thief.' Second, is that apparently this is a family feud, which reduces any potential value of the case. You'll have difficulty convincing an attorney to take the case, except on an hourly basis, which would be an expensive proposition.
